The Ned's Fund Goodwood Lecture 2024 presents an Evening with Frank Gardner OBE
On the evening of Thursday 24th October, Goodwood House was once again home to our 'An evening with' lecture. This year's speaker was none other than Frank Gardner, the BBC’s full time Security Correspondent, covering events across Ukraine, the Middle East, Afghanistan and the UK.
This year's talk was in aid of Snow Camp, for which Frank Gardner is an ambassador.
About Frank Gardner
Frank grew up in Hampshire before studying Arabic and Islamic Studies at Exeter University. In 2004, while reporting for the BBC from Saudi Arabia, he was shot six times at close range in a terrorist attack, leaving him paralysed in the legs. After 14 surgical operations, he returned to work with a wheelchair and was awarded an OBE by Queen Elizabeth. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from seven UK universities and has authored five bestselling books. His latest novel, ‘Invasion’, was published in May. A keen skier and nature photographer, he is President of the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO).
About Goodwood House
Goodwood is the seat of the Dukes of Richmond, whose family art collection is one of the greatest in any English country house. The State Apartments can be visited before and after Frank Gardner’s talk.
About Snow Camp
Ned’s Fund was delighted to be supporting Snow Camp at this year’s lecture. Frank Gardner is an Ambassador for Snow Camp, a youth charity Ned's Fund has been proud to support since 2019. Snow Camp is a life-changing snow sports programme for young people in need, taking them from beginners to trained snow sports instructors in just one year, and with volunteering and apprenticeship progression routes available at the end. Alongside learning to ski or snowboard, young people also have access to life skills training and mental health support. Ned's Fund has already funded seven young people who have been able to complete their Snow Camp journey and apprenticeships as a result.
"Snow Camp is fantastic and I'm so honoured to be a part of it. Snow Camp goes into places and meets young people, who have got talent but need to find a way to use it. Snow Camp gives them that opportunity and, in many cases, saves them from bad situations in terms of life choices, and discovers the talent that wouldn't otherwise be discovered." - Frank Gardner, BBC Security Correspondent

Open Garden in aid of the Sussex Cricket Foundation
On Sunday 28th July, David and Victoria Thomas opened their fabulous garden for free to encourage donations through Ned’s Fund for the Sussex Cricket Foundation. It included a glass of sparkling wine and some nibbles!
Located in Kirdford, RH14 0NH, Parsonage Farm is a major garden in beautiful setting developed over 30 years with fruit theme and many unusual plants. Formally laid out on grand scale with long vistas, the garden includes a C18 walled garden with borders in apricot, orange, scarlet and crimson, as well as a topiary walk, pleached lime allée, tulip tree avenue, rose borders and vegetable garden with trained fruit.
Other highlights includes a turf amphitheatre, autumn shrubbery, yew cloisters and a jungle walk.
Ned’s Fund is currently giving direct financial support for Diyon, a promising young cricketer who would otherwise be unable to pursue his love of the game. Our funds are being used by the Foundation to help with his travel, provision of kit, and other training expenses.

Millie & Jake cycle the South Downs Way in 1 day
On Tuesday 28th of May, Millie (Ned's sister) and her partner Jake cycled the South Downs Way in a day! The South Downs Way is a 100 mile trail with an accent of 3800m which follows the old routes and droveways along the chalk escarpment and ridges of the South Downs. They set off in Eastbourne and finished in Winchester. It was an enormous challenge in some very challenging weather!
They raised a staggering £2000 (including Gift Aid) for Ocean Youth Trust South, an adventure sail training charity which takes young people aged 11-25 to sea in a 30-metre vessel Prolific. Both Millie and Jake are sailors, so know first hand the excitement and challenges of sailing.
To date Ned's Fund has raised over £90K for our charities and it is Jo's greatest wish to distribute £100K to the them by the end of this year, 5 years since it was founded. Through the generosity and fundraising of others, Ned's Fund has contributed to other chosen charities to provide activities and opportunities for young individuals. The outcome of this is greater self-development and awareness of their true potential. Opportunities like these are invaluable to our society as they encourage young people to face barriers they thought they couldn't overcome and discover a new path in life. Through the telling of Ned's story we aim to raise awareness of the issue of suicide in young people and the amazing work of the charities we support. We hope that by fundraising in memory of Ned we can give young people, like Ned, hope for a happy and purposeful future.

2024 AJ Bell 3 Valley Rally
On the 13th-16th April our founder Jo Marsden and her team of 4 took part in the 2024 AJ Bell 3 Valley Rally to raise invaluable funds for national youth charity Snow Camp. Taking place at Val Thorens, the highest ski resort in Europe, Jo and her team took on challenges such orienteering, biathlon, zip wire, snow shoe hike, team parallel slalom and team distance challenge. Jo was the 5th highest individual fundraiser raising £2,115! Overall the event smashed it's target of £100,000 and pulled in a whopping £130,000!
Since 2003, Snow Camp have been using the power of skiing and snowboarding to break down barriers and broaden horizons for thousands of inner-city young people across the UK. The charity delivers a fully accredited year-long programme journey for young people and youth projects, run at indoor and artificial ski slopes across the UK and incorporating a life-changing week in the mountains. Using a unique combination of snowsports, life-skills, qualifications and vocational opportunities, our programmes inspire & empower young people who would never otherwise have access to snowsports - bringing increased confidence, self-esteem and aspirations. Now, in our 20th year as national youth charity, and given the increasing challenges young people face across the UK, there’s never been a better time to get in touch and support our mission.

An evening with Rupert Maas
On the evening of Thursday 9th November we were treated to a highly insightful and entertaining evening with Victorian art expert and dealer Rupert Maas at Goodwood House. Huge thanks to Rupert for kindly giving up his time for Ned's Fund. Thanks also for the generosity the Duke and Duchess of Richmond for letting us use their home and to all the staff who helped on the night. And of course thanks to all of you who came along and continue to support Ned’s Fund. With the funds raised this year we have been able to give thousands of pounds to charities that support young people and let them experience opportunities they may otherwise not get.
As well as talking about some of his favourite works of Victorian art, he talked about some of the successes (and failures!) of owning an art gallery in London. He also gave us an insight into who it works behind the scenes at the BBC's Antiques Roadshow.

Andrew Graham-Dixon presents 'In the Picture'
This years 'An Evening with' talk at Goodwood House was 'In the Picture' with Andrew Graham-Dixon. The event was held on November 10th. Special thanks to Andrew for this highly entertaining and intriguing talk. Thanks must go to the support and huge generosity of the Duke of Richmond for kindly allowing us to host this highly entertaining evening, that is now in its 3rd year.
In this wide-ranging talk, Andrew played the role both of biographer and detective to discuss the principles and practice of art appreciation. He explored some of his favourite paintings from many different corners of the history of art, telling us the fascinating stories that lie behind them and revealing their often hidden meanings.
"I was really delighted to speak in order to raise some money for Ned's Fund, which is such an important cause, working in an area where every last little bit of extra help is deeply needed. I felt honoured to be asked and would do it again in the blink of an eye."

Freddy and Minty's Devizes to Westminster canoe race challenge.
Congratulations to Freddy Marsden and Minty Petch and a huge THANK YOU to all those who supported their epic paddle from Devizes to Teddington Lock over the Easter weekend, navigating their kayak along the Kennet and Avon Canal and the Thames with countless locks not to mention Bank Holiday cruisers, longboats and of course swans.
Freddy and Minty completed the 108 mile course in 18 hours, 38 minutes and ten seconds in the course of three days, camping overnight at Newbury and Marlow along the way. They came 4th out of 58 in the junior doubles class; 3rd in the mixed doubles, and their Bryanston boat was the second of the ten school crews. Having finished in 6th place after the first day they moved up to 5th on Saturday and finally grabbed 4th on Sunday. At the same time they smashed through their initial fundraising target of £1000 and the money they have raised will go directly to help other young people participate in challenges of this kind through our five great charities.

An evening with Philip Mould
We had a hugely enjoyable evening at Goodwood House on Thursday 18th November, with nearly 250 people in attendance. During 'An evening with Philip Mould: A life in art', Philip, the co-presenter of the award winning BBC1 series Fake or Fortune, gave us an insight into his past and present life as an art hunter and lover, where he introduced us to some of the pictures and stories that have driven him.
Thanks to everyone who purchased tickets, to Philip for an enormously entertaining and interesting talk and to the the Duke and Duchess of Richmond and Gordon who generously gave us the use of their home for the night.
"I was one of those incredibly lucky children who found a vocational path when I was young, and it led me forward. I put this partly down to luck. Without this navigational guide, I too could have drifted. I see Ned’s tragically short life and challenges as an exhortation to me - and others in a position to do so - to help people like Ned in the ways we can".

Jo's Petworth Tennis Tournament
Who needs Wimbledon!! We had a brilliant day of tennis at Petworth Lawn Tennis Club yesterday and managed to raise over £1000 for the fund.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part and to everyone who donated. Congratulations to the winners in the day: Jo and her wonderful doubles partner for the day, Jim.
A special thank you to grill master Rusty for providing the food, to club Chairman Michael for all his support and Peter for organising what turned out to be an almost overwhelming turnout. Everyone had such fun and I think some of them might still be on the courts!!
Many, many thanks.

Lutie Akinci
Huge congratulations to Lutie and her fantastic achievement running the Istanbul Marathon. Not only did she do incredibly well, she smashed the fund raising target for Ned’s Fund. A massive thanks to everyone who donated. Here are some words from Lutie:
"A day in the life of being professional... just for one day...
I finished 3rd Turkish female!!!! From 4000 runners, 3 places behind the Kenyan elites and two in front of me were Turkish professionals, insane! I was part of a huge presentation prize giving with all the Kenyans!
Very exciting day the race it’s self was very quiet as they had to do social distancing route etc so that was a shame as not many crowds, thankfully mum and dad were able to see me three times which kept me going! What a day, and one to remember!!!
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, it’s really appreciated and let’s hope we can change more lives together!"

Mike Swinyard
Massive congratulations to Mike, who completed 4 of the 10 Marathons he hoped to run.
"Unfortunately, due to COVID19, the Barcelona, Rome and Vienna marathons have already been cancelled and I expect more to come. This is very sad for me as have been training for this for a long time! I am looking at other options so I can continue to complete the 10 marathons. I am sorry to anybody who donated, however it might be the only option that I complete the 10 marathons over an extended time period. The fact that the marathons have been cancelled does not stop how great Ned’s Fund is, so please do still donate!"

Francyne Thompson
Francyne so bravely challenged herself to spend three days dog sledding across Sweden (around 5-7 hours a day). Francyne spent her time in the wilderness, where she learnt how to live like the Sami people at the base camps. Francyne raised over £3000 in support of Ned's Fund and here's the reason why...
“When I came across the Artic Challenge, I knew this was the one for me. I was ready for a physical and mental challenge and this definitely gave me that! I wanted to try and relate to Ned and all those dealing with similar challenges in life, and I wanted to prove that you can get through it.
I’ve done a few challenges over the years but this was by far the hardest. Every day in -40 degrees felt like years and it really made me think how hard it must be for those that struggle every day.
I’m glad I could help raise money for Ned’s Fund so that they can give support to other young people facing their own challenges but most of all I’m glad I could do it for my brother Jono (Ned’s childhood friend), Ned’s family & most of all Ned.”

Callum
Callum bravely decided to shave his head to raise money for Ned's Fund! He raised an incredible amount of £1260. Please check the gallery below for before and after photos and here's the reason why...
"I didn’t know Ned personally, but I’ve experienced losing a close family member to suicide so I understand that pain. Seeing that same impact on Ned’s family and once again seeing the risk that young people are under, I wanted to do something. In the middle of a rugby season in France, there wasn’t loads of fundraising options but I knew everyone would want to see me bald, so I decided to shave my hair off. The fundraising surpassed my expectations as people got behind the great work that Ned’s fund is doing. Thank you for all the contributions. I am grateful I was able to help support a great cause."

Lucy and Emily Harris
Emily and Lucy Harris (Ned's first cousins) took part in the Glasgow Half Marathon on the 29th September.
"We chose to run the Great Scottish Run (half marathon) in September to fundraise for Ned’s Fund as this was something that would challenge us both mentally and physically. When we entered back in April neither of us were keen runners and felt a little out of our comfort zones; it was having our ‘why’ and Ned always in our thoughts that pushed us through the training and the run. It was amazing to be able to contribute to a great cause that is very close to our hearts. Fundraising is so important to raise awareness and inform people of the work smaller funds like Ned’s Fund do. "

Tough Mudder
Just a huge thank you to Sam Luxton for organising the Tough Mudder fundraiser back in May. We raised over £6,000 and it was great to see everyone come together and get stuck in.
"As a very close friend to the Harris family, I was very upset to hear the tragic news of Ned’s passing. Unfortunately, Ned is not the first person, or young adult I know that has taken their own life. Therefore, to show support and empathy to the Harris’s, and anyone else that has or is feeling in a similar situation. I brought together our closest friends to do Tough Mudder and raise money in support of Ned’s Fund. Along with a brilliant pub quiz that involved over 100 of Midhurst’s local residents, we collectively raised over £6,000 for Ned’s Fund. I am entirely confident in Jo and the rest of the team, that this money will be used to offer young adults real life solutions to life’s everyday challenges, and help massively reduce the chances of another young adult from making such a heart-breaking decision."

"Ascot continues to support the great work that Ned's Fund is doing to deal with the problems young people face growing up. Suicide is something whose tragedy is often not discussed, and only by raising awareness and tackling the difficult root cause, can we lessen the frequency. To do this, it is important that companies and individuals give generously to charities who's work helps young people and their families." Bonham's Art Auction
On 27 November 2019 Bonhams sold ten works donated by these wonderful artists in aid of Ned's Fund: Antony Gormley, Michael Craig-Martin, Alan Kitching, Jonathan Knight, Christopher Le Brun, Norman Ackroyd, Emily Lamb, Alison Crowther, Quentin Blake and Philip Jackson. The sale made just under £14,000 which means that Ned's Fund can help many more young people find their path in life. A huge thank you to all the artists, and to those who bid. |
"It’s wonderful to see Bonhams and so many artists come together to help Ned’s Fund with such style and generosity. It’s a cause that certainly deserves all our support. When a young person suffers some kind of setback in life, they can find themselves stuck on a course that damages their education and hopes for the future. Ned’s Fund exists to give people in that situation a chance to move to a different place, to work in a team, earn respect and responsibility. It is a positive approach to dealing with what, sadly, seems to be a growing need. Please do everything you can to support the Ned’s Fund sale!"

“A few months ago, Jo had just given me a good drubbing on the tennis court. However, it had not seemed to make her happy. In fact, she was a bit of a wreck that day. I did not know her well at that time but we got on well together from the “off’. It was only as we chatted at the end of the game that we realised the sense of connection that we both felt was from our shared experience of a family tragedy. I had, a few short years before, lost my wife to the cruel and sudden blow of inoperable brain cancer. Jo had lost Ned in circumstances nearly as unforeseeable as my wife’s brain tumour, but worse, much worse, because of his youth and the preventability of his passing.
This is what Ned’s Fund is all about. To help prevent the deaths of young people, suffering from exclusion from family, education and society. Jo had seen my Puffin and, at the end of our revealing chat - with typical directness - suggested that I might like to donate it to the Ned’s Fund auction. I was very happy to give my immediate assent."

" I felt moved to donate a piece of my work for the Neds Fund auction because I have three young sons. As a craft practitioner I understand the holistic value of working with your hands so I wholeheartedly support the Neds Fund’s aims of encouraging the development of those skills in young people."
